Feculent Gnarlmaw

Deep within the 7th Dominion of the Realm of Uglu festers the Ochre Kingdom. Hidden from the armies of Order by miasmal fog and the impenetrable illusions of the Great Bog that surrounds it the Yellow King rules from his fetid throne.

The Great Bog stretches for uncounted miles in all directions. Within its confines one can find endless perils not the least of which are Nurgle's Plague Toads and groves of Feculent Gnarlmaws. Disease rules the bog as much as the Yellow King rules the Ochre Kingdom. Followers of Nurgle worship freely within the miasmas of the swamp and the veil between Uglu and Nurgle's Garden blurs to nothing among the glades of Gnarlmaws and Rotroot Mangroves.

The nature of Uglu has shrouded the Ochre Kingdom since the Age of Legends. No one knows for sure if the Yellow King is a title handed down through the ages to successors or if the King is a truly ancient being. There are whispered rumors within the court that the Yellow King originally hailed from the World-That-Was and that Nurgle preserved him as he did several of his favored champions.

Beast of Nurgle

Finally painted one of my favorite miniatures of all time. The Beast of Nurgle. I love this model and I love its fluff every bit as much. Who doesn't love an enthusiastic slug-puppy covered in caustic slime with writhing tentacles on its head?

Grimgristle Beetlesucker

T'lowg'grh Dh'erg'z
Grimgristle Beetlesucker
Greater Daemon of Nurgle

Grimgristle Beetlesucker is a Great Unclean One summoned by the Yellow King to help him bring the Plaguefather's gifts to the Mortal Realms. However, due to his immense power he is more akin to a partner than a servant. Together with Gutrot Spume the three lead the armies of Nurgle across the land, sea and air. Grimgristle's demonic armies include many plague drones and swarms of plague flies that darken the skies and obscure his plaguebearers' advance. Grimgristle's very breath is lousy with plague flies that, at close range, ravage the bodies of those that oppose Nurgle's gifts. Another power that Grimgristle possess that makes his armies so deadly is his ability to twist time around his followers. As a daemon he exists outside of time and so he can manipulate it to speed his normally ponderous minions along their way to spread the Grandfather's blessings. Many armies have fallen due to their belief that Nurgle's daemons are slow and plodding. Grimgristle finds the shocked look on their faces to be quite humorous.

I used the name generator in Slaves to Darkness to generate his true name and his use name. The rest just wrote itself. He is one of my leaders for my newest Nurgle army. The army is built in three parts. The "land" army is lead by the Yellow King and his subordinate the Red Duke and is predominantly made up of Blightkings. The "Sea" portion is lead by Gutrot Spume and his first mate and consists of primarily Blightkings and chaos spawn. The "Air" army is lead by Grimgristle Beetlesucker and consists mainly of Plague Drones and Plaguebearers.

The Court of the Yellow King

I've begun my new Nurgle army with a bang. I was surprised how fast I managed to paint these guys. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that it was really fun. I haven't painted Nurgle models in a while so I am discovering how much I missed it. I will be adding more models to the army tomorrow and hopefully I'll have time to paint them up this weekend.

Blightlord

Blightking 2. This was going to be the leader of the unit and his skin color was going to be the color of the rest of the unit, but I changed my mind on both. The skin color was too dark for the rest of the unit and after I had built the rest of the unit he looked less like a leader.

Tocsin bearer

After painting my Mamon it pushed me back over the edge to working on a Nurgle army again. I have several models that I can use already from the old Realm of Chaos range and some third party companies. So I went out and bought a box of Blightkings to add some beef to the army. These have to be my favorite models from the current range, even thought they came out a few years ago. I painted them as a group so most of them are pretty far along, but I wanted to finish one before I completed the others to get a feel for how I wanted them to look.

Mamon, daemon prince of Nurgle

When I traded to get this model it was already painted. The paint job wasn't too bad, it just wasn't that good. It has been a while since I have painted a Nurgle model and this one was pretty easy and fun to do so I primed him up and went to town. I wish all models were this easy to do.

My first retcon

A while ago I created a large Dark Mechanicus model named Inquisitor Matthias Balthasar Harnak  . The model I converted was unfortunately broken while I was at work one day and subsequently left in a box in pieces. Unfortunately I could not find all his pieces so I had to reassemble him in new ways. With this new creation and my "new" army I decided to retcon his backstory, which I will keep for another model to be created.

Justinian Lorme was once a techmarine for the XIVth legion, the Death Guard. He was chiefly in charge of maintaining the mechanisms related to containment of the deadly biological weapons of the legion. After the Heresy Lorme's interests began to lead to the forbidden field of warp technology as well augmentic surgery which was usually left to the apothecaries of the legion. Lorme was no longer interested in simple machines and began to combine flesh with technology in disturbing ways. He also began researching the demon engines of the Dark Mechanicum. Now millennia later he has ascended to demonic heights for his contribution to Nurgle's cause. Throughout the millennia of the Long War Lorme has augmented his body beyond that of even the Death Guard plague marines physique. He now towers above those who serve him. His distain for the Poxwalkers often employed by other members of the Death Guard is shown by his chosen form of locomotion. Fit only as fuel for his experiments Poxwalkers find no place among his armies.

Nurgle Defiler wip

Here is little wip of my Nurgle defiler conversion. Nuclear symbol to follow. Lol

Death Guard Defiler

I've never liked the defiler model. I've always like the soulgrinder model better even though they use the same leg assembly. I just don't like how boxy it looks. So I decided to convert one for use in my Death Guard army since they are one of the few daemon engines that can be given the Death Guard keyword. I'm pleased with how it turned out, but I'm having difficulty with what colors to paint it. Here it is fully converted and primed.

Foetid Bloat-drone

I've just finished my first Foetid Bloat-drone from the Dark Imperium starter box. It is fun to paint. The next one I will paint may have some more color to it's armor, or it may just have different color flesh.

Necrosius the Apostle

I've been working on a Necrosius conversion and its pretty much done. I've decided to keep him a whiter color than the other Death Guard I'm painting in honor of his apothecary background. I like the model and it was a simple conversion. I've found that Dark Eldar blades make excellent scythe blades.

Death Guard Leviathan Dreadnought

I decided since I am starting a new Death Guard army that I should include some heavy support to the troops on the ground and so I have repainted my Salamanders Leviathan dreadnought as a Death Guard dreadnought. I painted the shoulder red in honor of the Dawn Raiders legacy as well as including their symbol on the right chest plate. The backstory on this model is that this particular Leviathan chassis was stolen from a loyalist chapter in the last few hundred years and a new inhabitant was interred into the sarcophagus, the last living Dusk Raider from the original 14th Legion.

Changing of the (Death) Guard

So, with the release of the new 40k rules set I was on the fence as to what army to make. Nurgle is my favorite chaos god, but it is currently EVERYONES favorite chaos god since the release of the new rules and models. So I was less inclined to make a Death Guard army. I have been feeling especially  Slaaneshi of late and so I decided to proxy an Emperor's Children noise marine army. I was very pleased with their performance, pun intended. The unfortunate downside of going that rout though, is that there are no new noise marine models and the bits for making them are fail cast resin and currently unavailable. The better alternative is the Kakophonii from Forge World. Unfortunately they are too expensive to get an entire army of them. The last alternative is to convert another model into a noise marine. Unfortunately a third time that rout is also too expensive in the end.

And then fate intervened and I was able to make an amazing trade for an unpainted Death Guard army. I traded some Bolt Action miniatures and rulebooks that I was not using for the army. So now I am playing Death Guard. My first game was pretty brutal and I may not use that list again, unless it is against someone I really don't like or a tournament. Scabiathrax plus Leviathan Dreadnought = win.

I've already started painting my new Death Guard. Here is the first fruits of my labor.

Brotherhood of the Crow part 34

I'm still working on getting a new computer so it's more phone pictures for now.
Here is my beloved army standard bearer.
I decided to go with an old style feel. I've always loved Blanche's use of the Mona Lisa in his paintings so I decided to continue that tradition. At first I was planning on painting both sides of the banner with the same image. Unfortunately not only is that a pain, it is also more fun to paint two different images. For the second image I decided to recreate an Ian Miller painting, which I recently purchased. (More on that in a future post.) I decided to do a step by step on the paintings.

The second painting took fewer steps.

 The final product.

Brotherhood of the Crow part 33

I wanted to take better pictures of this model, but until I get a new computer this will have to do. This is my Fimir champion conversion. I hope you enjoy.
