Salamanders Legion part 6

I have finished my conversion of Narik Dreygur, the Iron Warrior delgatus that defected to the Salamanders commander Cassian Dracos on the Forge World of Xana. I painted him as a Blackshield to represent him turning his back on the Iron Warriors for his abandonment and betrayal. I've decided to call his warband the Chain Breakers to represent their goal of destroying as many of the Alpha Legion as they can, the chain being one of the Alpha Legions predominant icons. I will be painting a unit of ten veteran Iron Warriors in the same color scheme and using the shattered chain as their pauldron symbol instead of the Iron Warriors iron skull.

Salamanders Legion part 5

Cassian Dracos the first Commander of the XVIII Legion. Entombed in a dreadnought built by the hands of Vulkan himself to honor the veteran commanders accomplishments.

I decided to paint Dracos different from the other dreadnoughts. I decided black was an appropriate color for a couple of reasons. First is that it helps him stand out in a sea of green. Another reason is that many Legions, including the Salamanders, associate the color black with veteran status. A third reason is that I will be using him as both Cassian Dracos and Cassian Dracos Reborn and I felt that Dracos Reborn was a very dark and sinister character that black was appropriate for.  I will be adding Narik Dreygur to my army as well. Since I've found it difficult getting hold of his model for less than $50 I decided to convert a model to represent him. It wasn't difficult and he is done except for his base. So I'll post my pictures of him next, once he is completely done.

Salamanders Legion part 4

Finally another post. Just finished my behemoth of a Leviathan dreadnought. Such a great model and terrifying in combat. My air compressor has been broken for a while and I just fixed it so, hopefully, my Salamanders will be done soon. I've got all the airbrush work done on them and I just need to do all the detail.

Salamanders Legion part 3

Here is my praetor, Lord Protector Val'kir. He is the commander of Realm Skarokk, the 7th chapter of the Salamanders Legion and ruler of the haven city of Skarokk. His drake skin cloak turned out better than I thought it would.

Salamanders Legion part 2

I know I said I would be posting a terminator squad next, but it just didn't turn out that way. The terminators are close to being finished, but I skipped over them to paint a tactical support flamer squad. The flamer squad isn't 100% finished because I still need to paint the pauldrons with legion and squad symbols. Since the Salamanders Legion didn't use standard Imperial symbols I am having to make up my own, especially since the Salamanders artwork in the Horus Heresy books doesn't show any except a skull on veterans.

Salamanders Legion part 1

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I haven't really been feeling inspired to paint. That has recently changed. I just got a copy of Betrayal At Calth for a commission I'm doing and I've decided to make a Salamanders army for Horus Heresy (30K). Originally last year I had it in mind to create an Iron Warriors army for 30k, but I didn't have the money to spend on such a thing so I gave up on it. Since Betrayal at Calth came a long it became a lot cheaper to build a Legion army. I decided to go with the Salamander Legion for a couple of practical reasons and a few fluff reasons. The practical reasons are: Gunmetal is more difficult to work with through an airbrush than green and the Salamanders have better rules than the Iron Warriors. The fluff reasons are that I like how unique the Salamanders' philosophy as a Legion is, they are actually interested in protecting the citizens of the Empire and I respect self sacrifice above all else and they have plenty of that. I am going back and forth on what to get for the legion, but luckily the Betrayal at Calth has enough for almost 2000pts. The first thing in the box that I've painted is the Contemptor dreadnought. It was pretty quick and easy. The army's look is going to be that of a Legion at war, dirty and battered. It isn't necessarily going to be during or after the Dropsite Massacre, but it will look as though it could be. The Salamanders Legion is divided into seven "realms" each named for a major city on Nocturne. The army will be a part of the Skarokk "realm", which is the seventh realm, thus the VII on the dreadnoughts left shoulder. I tried to do the "heated metal" look on the Kheres Assault cannon, but failed to really pull it off. I just couldn't get the metallic effect in the colored area, but over all I am still happy how the model turned out and it looks good on the table. I'll probably be getting a few more dreadnoughts. I feel like of all the Legions the Salamanders would have one of the highest numbers of dreadnoughts.

Next up will be a Praetor and some Firedrakes that I made from the Cataphractii terminators that came in the box.
